BAS-RBM
BAS-RBM simulates changes in the high-energy electrons trapped around Earth to help protect satellites, improve forecasting of space weather, and understand radiation belts at Jupiter and Saturn.
I am a research scientist in the Space Weather and Atmosphere team at BAS. I investigate fundamental problems in radiation belt physics with relevance to space weather hazards. I develop global plasma wave models, essential for the operation of radiation belt models in the UK, Europe and the US. I am also interested in extreme space weather and have applied extreme value analysis to determine the 1 in 100 year space weather event levels for low, medium, geosynchronous and high Earth orbit to help assess the impact of extreme events on the satellite fleet. I am currently the Principal Investigator on a NERC Standard Grant to investigate the effects of coupled wave power and plasma properties on radiation belt dynamics and a Co-Investigator on a NERC Pushing the Frontiers Grant to investigate the effects of realistic electric and magnetic fields on radiation belt dynamics. Prior to this I was a Co-Investigator in the NERC Highlight Topic Rad-Sat (2017-2022) and led work packages in the SWIMMR project Sat-Risk (2020-2024) and the EU FP7 projects SPACESTORM (2014-2017) and SPACECAST (2011-2014). I enjoy exploring the use of scientific data as art and am the science lead in a multi-disciplinary art-science collaboration inspired by the ‘sounds of space’. I have published 152 papers in peer-reviewed journals covering a wide range of topics in space plasma physics and have a Thomson citation h index of 61. In 2025 I was awarded the Chapman Medal of the Royal Astronomical Society for my world-leading and transformative research on plasma waves in magnetospheric physics.
